Best Cocktail Bars in Berlin

15 bars Updated 2024

Berlin's cocktail scene developed differently from London or New York. While those cities built upward — more bars, more seats, more theatrics — Berlin went in the opposite direction. Buck and Breck has 14 seats. Becketts Kopf seats 20. Victoria Bar seats 30. This is a city that treats cocktail bars like libraries: places for quiet concentration, not performance. The result is a standard that punches well above the city's price point.

You will pay less for a better Martini in Berlin than in any other major European capital. The city's bartenders tend to have deep technical knowledge and strong opinions about dilution. These are not always comfortable places for those who want to point at a menu and receive a drink without discussion. They are exceptional places for those who want to learn something about what they are drinking.

Our editors visit every cocktail bar on this list at least twice a year. The rankings reflect quality, not just popularity.

Buck and Breck

Sponsored
Mitte $$$$

Fourteen seats. No signage. A brass bell above the door you ring to enter. Berlin's most coveted cocktail experience is also its most intimate. Reservations open two weeks in advance and go within hours. The seasonal menu changes monthly. Go for the house martini.

Hours: Tue-Sat 8pm-2am
Best for: The most exclusive cocktail experience in the city.

Tausend

Mitte $$$

Beneath the S-Bahn arches near Friedrichstrasse, Tausend splits its identity between a serious cocktail bar and a live music venue. The cocktail programme is overseen by one of the city's best bartenders. Arrive by 9pm.

Best for: Cocktails followed by late-night jazz.

Becketts Kopf

Prenzlauer Berg $$$

Named after Samuel Beckett and seating only 20 people, this bar on Pappelallee has been one of Berlin's finest cocktail rooms since 2008. Every drink is explained. No house music.

Best for: Quiet, serious drinking.

Prater Garten

Prenzlauer Berg $

Berlin's oldest beer garden has a hidden bar in the main building that serves proper cocktails alongside the traditional Pilsner. Best time: before the weekend crowds arrive.

Best for: Classic drinks in a historic setting.

Zsa Zsa Noir

Charlottenburg $$$

A glamorous throwback to Weimar-era Berlin, all velvet banquettes and dark wood. The bar programme focuses on classic cocktails with German spirits.

Best for: Date nights in west Berlin.

Würgeengel

Kreuzberg $$

Named after the Buñuel film and operating since 1992, this Kreuzberg institution has outlasted every trend. The daiquiri is exceptional.

Best for: Late nights in Kreuzberg after the clubs have warmed up.

Zwiebelfisch

Charlottenburg $

A West Berlin relic from the 1970s, now somewhat legendary for its unchanged interior and strong, cheap cocktails. The bartenders have been there for decades.

Best for: History.

Ora

Kreuzberg $$

140 natural wines and a cocktail list that changes seasonally. One of the best bars in Kreuzberg for a grown-up night out. The Aperol Negroni is not on the menu but will always be made on request.

Best for: Wine-adjacent cocktail drinkers.

Madame Claude

Friedrichshain $

Bar and live venue with a strong local following. The cocktail list is basic but the atmosphere is not.

Best for: Friedrichshain regulars.

Strandbar Mitte

Mitte $$

Open-air bar on the Spree banks with a tropical bent and decent daiquiris. Summer only.

Best for: Riverside cocktails on warm evenings.

Das Meisterstück

Prenzlauer Berg $$

Named after Meisterbrau but focused on craft cocktails. Intimate room, rotating seasonal specials, and a bar programme that clearly loves its work.

Best for: Prenzlauer Berg professionals.

Bar Raval

Mitte $$$

Spanish-influenced cocktail bar with a strong vermouth and amaro selection. The tapas programme is excellent.

Best for: Those who need food with their cocktails.

Schwarze Traube

Kreuzberg $$$

Small, exceptionally serious. The bartenders at this Kreuzberg bar trained under European cocktail competition winners. The martini programme alone is worth a visit.

Best for: The most discerning cocktail drinkers in the city.

Rum Trader

Charlottenburg $$

One of the world's great rum bars, operating since 1977 in a small room in Charlottenburg. Gregor Scholl has stocked over 100 rums.

Best for: Rum enthusiasts.

Victoria Bar

Schöneberg $$$

The older sibling of Buck and Breck. Open since 2001, Victoria Bar on Potsdamer Strasse helped rebuild the serious cocktail culture in Berlin.

Best for: The original Berlin cocktail experience.
