The Best After Work Bars in Paris

Paris takes after-work seriously. Not as a quick drink before the Métro, but as a proper ritual — the apéro, drawn out over two hours, often turning into dinner. We've spent considerable time testing where to go when the office clock hits 6pm. These are the bars that earn our repeat business, from Marais mezcal dens to the handful of classics that haven't sold out to tourists.

The Must-Go Classics

01
Le Comptoir du Relais
A tight, always-heaving brasserie beloved by local office workers who end up staying for three hours. The terrace fills fast from 6pm; the interior is better lit than you'd expect. Order the house Côtes du Rhône by the glass or a proper pastis. The staff move at speed and know regulars by name.
Order: House Côtes du Rhône or Pastis
02
Candelaria
A Mexican cantina by day and a serious mezcal bar by night. The back-room cocktail bar (entered through a fridge door) specialises in agave spirits and creative highballs. It fills up early, so arrive by 7pm if you want a seat. Order the Oaxacan Negroni.
Order: Oaxacan Negroni
03
Experimental Cocktail Club
The granddaddy of Paris's cocktail revolution, still worth the price. The townhouse on Rue Saint-Sauveur draws post-work professionals who know their way around a drinks menu. Order the house Old Fashioned or ask the bartender what's new.
Order: House Old Fashioned
04
Bar Hemingway at the Ritz
It costs what it costs and it's worth it. The tiny wood-panelled room feels like drinking inside a memory. The bartenders here are institution-grade. Come on a Tuesday when it's quieter. Order the Clean Dirty Martini, they invented it.
Order: Clean Dirty Martini
05
Le Mary Celeste
Perpetually packed with the creative industries crowd who descend from nearby studios and agencies. The natural wine list is the best in the neighbourhood. Get there before 7:30pm or wait at the bar. Order anything from the Loire Valley section.
Order: Loire Valley Natural Wine

Beyond the Main Streets

Our second selection covers some of the city's most consistent performers — bars where the quality doesn't vary by the night and where the post-work crowd brings genuine energy.

06
Glass
Glass sits on the border of Pigalle and the 9th, and draws a mixed after-work and late-night crowd. Small bar, good music (not too loud), bartenders who take their work seriously. Order the Negroni variations — they change monthly.
Order: Negroni Variation of the Month
07
La Conserverie
A converted 19th-century jam factory with a sun-trap courtyard that's one of Paris's worst-kept secrets. Order bottles of wine with charcuterie boards. Gets busy from 6pm; the trick is to arrive at 5:30pm when it opens.
Order: Wine Bottles with Charcuterie
08
Sherry Butt
Named after the sherry barrels used to age Scotch, this long narrow bar draws whisky enthusiasts and cocktail drinkers equally. Good music, low lighting, no attitude. Order the Highball of the Week.
Order: Highball of the Week
09
Le Syndicat
A manifesto bar: only French spirits, exclusively French ingredients. The result is a drinks menu unlike anything else in the city. Order the Calvados cocktail or let the bartender choose. Popular with industry workers who finish early.
Order: Calvados Cocktail
10
Café de Flore
Yes it's touristy. But the after-work crowd here is genuinely Parisian, and the terrace is perfect for watching the 6th come alive. Order a glass of Chablis and a croque-monsieur. Budget 90 minutes minimum.
Order: Chablis & Croque-monsieur

What to Know Before You Go

Paris after-work culture runs roughly 6pm to 9pm, after which bars transition into a different, later-night crowd. Arrive early for the best tables, especially Thursday and Friday. Several bars on this list require reservations for groups of four or more. The drinks are not cheap by London standards, but they're stronger and the snacks are better.
