Our Picks
Terasse 28 Munich rooftop
Rooftop
★ 4.6
Terasse 28
Schwabing$$$May–Sep: Tue–Sun 3pm–12am

A Schwabing apartment block rooftop converted by the bar operator downstairs into one of the neighbourhood's most relaxed summer destinations. No grand views but a very good natural wine list, mismatched outdoor furniture, and a playlist that stays on the right side of ambient. The kitchen sends up charcuterie and cheese until 10pm.

Panorama Sky Bar Munich
Rooftop
★ 4.5
Panorama Sky Bar
Altstadt$$$$Daily 5pm–1am

The hotel bar you tell visitors about when they want rooftops without the backpacker energy. Panorama Sky is sedate, the service is precise, and the view of the Marienplatz at dusk is as good as Munich gets. The Gin selection runs to 60 labels with a preference for Bavarian distilleries. Reservations are necessary from May through September.

Die Erhebung Munich rooftop
Rooftop
★ 4.5
Die Erhebung
Schwabing$$$Thu–Sat 6pm–2am

The name means elevation and it suits the ambition. Die Erhebung operates Thursday through Saturday only, which keeps the crowd deliberately curated. The cocktail list draws on Alpine botanicals — mountain pine, gentian, edelweiss tincture — and the results are technically accomplished and genuinely unique to this city. The view north toward the English Garden opens wider as the city empties below.

Hohenfeuer Munich rooftop bar

★ 4.4
Hohenfeuer
Maxvorstadt$$May–Oct: Tue–Sun 4pm–12am

The most accessible rooftop on this list in terms of price and atmosphere. Hohenfeuer draws students from the nearby Technical University alongside the museum district's evening crowd. Beers and Spritzes dominate. The sunset views toward the city centre are best captured on a clear June evening around 8pm, and the terrace knows it.

Maxwerk Roof Munich
Rooftop
★ 4.3
Maxwerk Roof
Maxvorstadt$$Jun–Aug: Fri–Sun 5pm–1am

A summer-only rooftop operating out of a converted print works building in Maxvorstadt. The bar is entirely outdoors. The music is louder than most on this list. The clientele skews early thirties and the drinks list is deliberately short — three cocktails, three beers, two wines. It works because the setting and the company carry everything else.

Glashaus Rooftop Munich
Rooftop
★ 4.3
Glashaus Rooftop
Glockenbachviertel$$Apr–Sep: Wed–Sat 6pm–1am

The art-house cinema downstairs is reason enough to visit this building. The rooftop bar above it is a bonus. Glashaus serves natural wine and craft beer to the post-screening crowd from Wednesday onwards, and the atmosphere has a bookish quality that the Glockenbach does particularly well. The terrace seats 30 and fills quickly after 7pm.

Aussicht Bar Munich Haidhausen
Rooftop
★ 4.2
Aussicht Bar
Haidhausen$$May–Sep: Tue–Sat 5pm–12am

One of Haidhausen's better-kept seasonal secrets. Aussicht Bar sits above a restaurant and serves drinks from a stripped-back menu while the views stretch west toward the Isar. The Spritz variations are competent. The Weissbier is cold. The neighbourhood regulars use it as a Tuesday wind-down spot and that community feel is genuine rather than manufactured.

Skyline Munich rooftop bar

★ 4.2
Skyline Munich
Sendling$$$Daily 5pm–2am

The southern districts rarely feature in Munich rooftop guides, which is precisely why Skyline Munich is worth knowing. The views from this hotel terrace in Sendling frame the city from an angle most visitors never see. The cocktail program is reliable. The crowds are thinner than comparable spots in the centre. Good for a quieter summer evening that does not require a reservation made six weeks out.

Dachterrasse Mitte Munich
Rooftop
★ 4.1
Dachterrasse Mitte
Altstadt$$$May–Oct: Daily 4pm–11pm

A straightforward hotel rooftop that earns its place on this list through location alone. The Altstadt church spires visible from the terrace provide the kind of backdrop that most cities cannot offer. The drinks list is competent without being inventive. Book early in summer, arrive at 4pm to claim the best seats, and stay until the towers go dark.

Olympia Heights Munich bar
Rooftop
★ 4.1
Olympia Heights
Schwabing-West$$$Jun–Sep: Fri–Sun 5pm–1am

Near the Olympic Park and worth visiting on a clear Friday evening when the park fills with joggers, cyclists, and people who have never quite left the 1970s architectural optimism of the site. The bar operates summer weekends only and the views over the Olympic stadium and across to the Alps are genuinely unique. The drinks are secondary to the setting but they are not embarrassing.

Rooftop Bars by Area

Altstadt

The city centre delivers the classic Munich skyline backdrop. Goldene Terrasse is the premium choice. Panorama Sky Bar and Dachterrasse Mitte are reliable alternatives. All require summer reservations. The Frauenkirche and Marienplatz views cannot be replicated elsewhere.

Haidhausen and Werksviertel

The east-bank creative quarter has the most interesting rooftop energy. Werksviertel Sky Bar is the headline act. Aussicht Bar is the quieter alternative. Both reward the short tram ride from the centre with a crowd that lives in the neighbourhood.

Schwabing

The northern residential quarter delivers more relaxed rooftop options. Terasse 28 and Die Erhebung operate on different schedules and different vibes. Olympia Heights near the park is the seasonal outlier worth making the trip for in summer.

What Makes a Great Rooftop Bar in Munich?

Munich's rooftop scene is seasonal by necessity and honest about it. The city's climate delivers proper winters that close every outdoor terrace from October to April, which means the summer rooftop season is genuinely celebrated rather than taken for granted. The good ones book out fast.

What makes Munich rooftops distinctive is the backdrop. On clear days — and Munich gets more clear days than any German city north of it — the Bavarian Alps appear with startling clarity on the southern horizon. The Frauenkirche's twin towers are visible from the city centre. The English Garden stretches north. These are views that no cocktail program can manufacture and that separate Munich's rooftop scene from cities with taller buildings but less interesting skylines.

If you visit in summer, make your rooftop reservations as soon as you book flights. The best spots fill two to three weeks out. The cocktail bar alternatives and hidden gem bars are the fallback when the rooftops are full. The full Munich bar guide covers all 8 categories to help you build an itinerary that covers the city properly.

Our recommendation for first-time visitors: Goldene Terrasse for the Frauenkirche view on your first evening, Werksviertel Sky Bar for the second night to see the city's other side. Both are best arrived at with a reservation and an empty afternoon stretching ahead of you.
