Capitol Hill

Seattle's nightlife nucleus and the city's most concentrated stretch of bars per block. The cocktail bars here operate at a genuinely high level, with Canon and Tavern Law among the best in the country. We recommend starting at Pike Street and working south. Plan for a late finish — most bars here stay open until 2am on weekends.

Ballard

Ballard has quietly become Seattle's craft brewery capital. Seventeen breweries sit within a 10-minute walk of each other on the Ballard Brewery District trail. The Tasting Room at Stoup Brewing and Reuben's Brews taproom draw locals every evening for pints and pretzels. Our full guide to Seattle craft beer bars covers the complete Ballard brewing corridor.

Belltown

Belltown is where Seattle's bar scene grew up in the 1990s and it still anchors the city's live music and late-night drinking calendar. The density of venues on 2nd Avenue between Bell and Battery Streets makes it ideal for bar-hopping on a Friday night.

South Lake Union

Tech money transformed South Lake Union into a polished after-work drinking district. The bars here cater to the Amazon campus crowd and run professional happy hours from 4pm to 7pm daily. Brave Horse Tavern and The Brave Horse Barrel Room anchor the scene.

Pioneer Square

Seattle's oldest neighbourhood carries a grit that the rest of the city has smoothed away. Underground bars, historic saloons, and live music venues share blocks with art galleries. Plan a visit on First Thursday when the galleries open and the bars fill up with the art crowd.

Fremont

Fremont keeps Seattle weird in the best way. The bars here skew eclectic — a medieval-themed pub, a craft beer bar with a pinball collection, a tiki room that takes its rum seriously. The neighbourhood draws a younger creative crowd and prices stay honest compared to Capitol Hill.
