A rooftop bar is only as good as its view, its drinks, and its willingness to let you stay. The worst of them charge 25 euros for a mediocre cocktail and ask you to vacate at 10pm because someone else has booked the space. The best let you arrive at 6pm, order something excellent, watch the light change over an entire city, and stay until the early hours feeling like you have been given access to something not everyone gets to see.

We visited 30 European rooftop bars across 12 cities this summer. These are the 12 that justified the trip. All are open seasonally from May through September. Some require a reservation. Most do not if you arrive before 8pm.

The 12 Best European Rooftop Bars This Summer

01

La Isabela — Barcelona

On the roof of the Hotel 1898 on Las Ramblas, La Isabela occupies a position that most Barcelona bars can only dream about. The colonial-era architecture of the building provides a terrace that sits at the perfect height above the city, with views across the Gothic Quarter rooftops and, on clear evenings, toward the sea. The cocktail menu is serious: 16 classic-era recipes reworked with modern technique, starting at 14 euros.

02

Park Bar — Lisbon

Accessed through a parking garage in Bairro Alto, which is approximately as uninviting as an entrance can be, Park Bar delivers one of the great surprise reveals in European bar culture. The rooftop looks over the entire Tejo estuary, the 25 de Abril bridge, and the Christ the King statue across the water. Beer costs 4 euros. The view is free. No reservation required. Arrive before 7pm in July and August.

03

Terrazza Aperol — Milan

Aperol's flagship terrace in the Duomo district is the most photographed rooftop in Milan, which works both for and against it. The Spritz is excellent and costs exactly what it should. The view across the Duomo rooftop spires at sunset is one of the genuinely spectacular bar views in Europe. Book two weeks ahead for July and August evenings, or arrive at 5pm and walk in without a reservation.

04

Sky Bar, Hotel Brummell — Barcelona

Barcelona earns two entries because its rooftop scene is strong enough to justify it. Hotel Brummell in Poble Sec sits at the foot of Montjuic and looks across the city toward the sea. The pool terrace functions as a bar from 5pm and the drinks are better than most hotel rooftops: a proper spirits selection, knowledgeable bartenders, and a menu that changes with what is in season.

05

Skybar at the Ohla Hotel — Barcelona

Three Barcelona entries, which tells you something about the city's command of this format. The Ohla Hotel's rooftop in the Gothic Quarter trades on a rooftop pool, a cocktail menu with real ambition, and a view that takes in the Tibidabo hills in one direction and the Old Port in the other. The bartenders are trained to a hotel standard that, in this case, means well above what most standalone bars can offer.

"The best rooftop bar is not the one with the most impressive view. It is the one that earns the view by putting something extraordinary in your glass."

06

Plunge Bar, Gansevoort Hotel — Paris

Paris's rooftop bar scene has expanded significantly since 2020, and the Gansevoort's Plunge Bar in the Marais is among the best of the new generation. The city's restrictions on rooftop development have kept the scene more curated than most European capitals, which means the bars that exist have had to justify their position. This one does, with a Champagne list that references actual producers and city views that look across Haussmanian rooftops in every direction.

07

Fahrenheit Rooftop — Lisbon

Lisbon's second entry sits in the Santos neighborhood and operates as a cocktail bar on a rooftop that has been properly designed rather than retrofitted. The drinks program takes inspiration from Portuguese spirits and local herbs. The view covers the Tejo and, on clear evenings, extends 30 kilometers across the Alentejo plain beyond. Wine from the Alentejo starts at 7 euros a glass.

08

Radio Rooftop — London

On the 10th floor of the ME London hotel on the Strand, Radio Rooftop has views toward St Paul's Cathedral, the Tate Modern, and the Shard that make it the most reliably spectacular bar view in central London. The cocktail menu is premium-priced at 18-24 pounds but the quality justifies it, and the bar's position above the Strand means you drink looking across London's skyline rather than across it from a distance.

09

Camparino Rooftop — Milan

Campari's brand home, updated for a new generation, occupies a rooftop position in the Piazza del Duomo that has no competitors in terms of location. The Negroni is built from the same recipe Campari has used since 1919, and it costs 11 euros, which is reasonable given you are drinking it with a direct view of one of the world's great cathedral facades. Reservation only in July and August.

10

Azotea del Circulo — Madrid

The rooftop of the Circulo de Bellas Artes in central Madrid is the best kept non-secret in a city that has no shortage of rooftop terraces. The view takes in the Gran Via, the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains behind the city, and the Puerta de Alcala all from a single vantage point. Entry costs 4 euros, the drinks are mid-priced, and the crowd is local. This is what a rooftop bar should be.

11

Fishmarket Rooftop — Amsterdam

Amsterdam's flat geography means its rooftop bars cannot compete on altitude. What they can offer is water. The Fishmarket Rooftop in the Centrum area looks across the IJ towards Amsterdam Noord, with ferries crossing the water and the city's distinctive warehouse architecture on both banks. Natural wine is the specialty, the kitchen serves small plates until midnight, and the crowd is the sort of Amsterdammers who have been to the city's best bars and quietly expect this to match.

12

Rooftop at the Hotel Vernet — Paris

The Vernet's terrace near the Champs-Elysees is less well known than the city's newer rooftop entrants, which is exactly why it makes this list. The service operates on the rhythm of a hotel bar rather than a rooftop spectacle, meaning drinks arrive promptly, refills are offered before you ask, and the experience is designed for people who want to drink well rather than be seen drinking. The Champagne selection is exceptional.

The Cities That Lead Europe's Rooftop Bar Scene

Barcelona has the most rooftop bars of any European city, and the quality ceiling is the highest. Lisbon has the best value, with rooftop bars that deliver extraordinary views at prices that would be impossible in London or Paris. Milan has the most dramatic individual positions, specifically around the Duomo. London has the best cocktail programs but the least favorable weather. Madrid has the best crowd and the most genuinely local atmosphere.
