Best New Year's Eve Bars in London

New Year's Eve in London runs on two tracks: the professionals who book months ahead and get exceptional evenings, and the optimists who find everywhere sold out by December 20th. If you fall into the first category, these 10 bars reward meticulous planning. The best ones request reservations 6 to 8 weeks in advance, and the truly exceptional venues disappear from availability within 90 days of December 31st.

The good news is that London's bar scene has matured enormously in the past decade. You no longer need to choose between spectacular atmosphere and excellent drinks. The bars on this list deliver both, plus the kind of service that makes paying premium prices feel justified.

Rooftop Bars for the Best London Countdown

London's rooftops are the natural first choice for New Year's Eve. The Thames fireworks are visible from multiple vantage points across the city, and these three venues offer the best sightlines combined with serious hospitality.

Madison bar
Madison
St Paul's ££££
The fireworks go off along the Thames and from here you see every single one. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls, heated terrace, champagne packages from £280. Sell out by October.
Aviary bar
Aviary
Shoreditch £££
10th floor covered terrace with views across East London and the City skyline. More accessible than Madison in terms of availability if you book by late October.
Iris bar
Iris
Bankside ££££
Directly on the South Bank with London Bridge and the Thames fireworks in direct sight. The view makes New Year's Eve here genuinely spectacular.

Best Cocktail Bars for New Year's Eve

If rooftop views are secondary to the quality of your drink, these cocktail specialists will absolutely deliver. Each has designed a specific New Year's Eve menu, with drinks that have been developed exactly for the occasion.

Nightjar bar
Nightjar
Shoreditch £££
80 seats maximum with extremely limited capacity. Tickets sell in September. Their New Year's Eve menu is their most ambitious of the year, featuring house-developed cocktails.
Lyaness bar
Lyaness
South Bank ££££
The most innovative cocktail bar in London. Their New Year's Eve package includes drinks that were developed specifically for this single evening.
Dandelyan bar
Dandelyan
Central London £££
The successor programme to the original bar delivers some of the most technically precise cocktails in London. Seasonal menu approach.

Hotel Bars That Do New Year's Eve Properly

London's best hotel bars understand that New Year's Eve is not a normal night. They structure their evenings as events, not just extended service. The investment is higher but the experience is proportional.

The American Bar at The Savoy
The American Bar at The Savoy
Strand ££££
4 hours, 4 courses of food, pianist throughout, and champagne at midnight. The most expensive on this list and absolutely worth every penny for a once-in-a-year occasion.
The Connaught Bar
The Connaught Bar
Mayfair ££££
Smaller scale than The Savoy but infinitely more intimate. Only 40 seats, advance bookings only, martini service throughout the evening.

Pubs That Do a Proper New Year's Eve

Not everyone wants to spend £200 per person on New Year's Eve. London's best traditional pubs acknowledge the occasion while maintaining their character. These two deliver genuine atmosphere without pretension.

The Lamb
The Lamb
Bloomsbury £
Victorian screens at the bar, real ales on tap, and a countdown that feels like it should be broadcast on television. Proper pub atmosphere.
The Crosse Keys
The Crosse Keys
City of London £
A Wetherspoons in a former banking hall. Not glamorous but you will be inside a genuinely beautiful Grade II listed building.

What to Book and When

New Year's Eve planning is entirely about timing. The rooftop bars and hotel bars operate on a different calendar than the rest of the year. Madison sells out by mid-October. The Savoy bookings close by November 1st.

If you want to ensure availability at one of the rooftop venues, make your reservation by September 15th. For the best cocktail bars like Nightjar and Lyaness, expect them to have limited capacity by October. November is the final booking window for pubs and smaller venues.

Book in person if you can. Many of these bars will take phone calls through their main reservation number. The concierge at your hotel, if you are staying in London, can often secure access that has already closed to online bookings. This is particularly true for hotel bars like The Savoy and The Connaught.

If you are planning to hit multiple bars for the countdown, manage your expectations. The crowd at most venues intensifies significantly after 11pm. Arrive before 10pm if you want a comfortable position at a table or the bar.

Finally, do not underestimate the value of knowing what you are going to order. Most of these bars will have crowded service at 11:50pm. A bartender at any of these venues will gladly recommend something in advance if you ask. Many of the classic cocktails like the Martini or the Old Fashioned remain the best choice on any evening, New Year's Eve included.
