Best Rum Bars in the World

Rum is the most misunderstood serious spirit in the world. For decades it played second billing to whiskey and gin in any conversation about craft. That conversation has changed. The bartenders who spent the 2010s quietly building the world's greatest rum programs are now running some of the most respected bars on earth. We spent 6 months tracking them down.

The 8 bars on this list span London, San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago, Dublin, Kingston, Havana, and Sydney. They share one quality: a genuine conviction that rum is as complex and serious as any other spirit category. Their back bars reflect it. Their cocktail lists prove it.

For readers who want the full craft spirits context, our piece on the craft spirits movement explains how the independent distillery explosion changed what serious bars had to work with. Rum was one of the last categories to benefit, but the timing meant the bars that built programs around it had the full range of Caribbean, Latin American, and European rums to choose from.

The Tiki Vanguard

Tiki bars developed a bad reputation through association with cheap rum and excessive sweetness. The best rum bars in the world have reclaimed the tiki aesthetic while applying serious craft standards to every element.

Smuggler's Cove San Francisco rum bar
Smuggler's Cove
Hayes Valley, San Francisco  ·  $$  ·  Mon-Sun 5pm-1:15am
The gold standard. Martin Cate's three-level tiki bar in Hayes Valley holds over 550 rum labels, the largest collection in North America. The cocktail menu runs 75 drinks built with obsessive attention to historical accuracy. The Mai Tai is made with period-correct specifications. The staff training program has produced more serious rum bartenders than any other venue in the US. Reservations strongly recommended. Our San Francisco cocktail bars guide has more.
Trailer Happiness London rum bar
Trailer Happiness
Notting Hill, London  ·  $$  ·  Tue-Sun 5pm-midnight
The basement tiki bar that introduced serious rum to a generation of London drinkers. The low ceilings, retro furnishings, and serious back bar create an experience that feels genuinely transported. The Rum Punch is a house classic mixed to a recipe unchanged since 2004. Ask the bartenders about their rum selection and expect a real conversation. One of the best London hidden gems in any category.
"We have 550 rums. The question we get asked most is which one is best. The answer is always: it depends entirely on what you are making."

The Serious Rum Bars

Beyond tiki, a generation of rum bars has built programs around sipping and appreciation rather than cocktails alone. These are the venues where the conversation about terroir, production method, and aging matters as much as the drink in front of you.

Cane and Table New Orleans rum bar
Cane & Table
French Quarter, New Orleans  ·  $$  ·  Mon-Sun 5pm-2am
New Orleans has a longer rum history than any US city. Cane & Table honors that by building its entire identity around proto-tiki and colonial-era Caribbean drinks. The menu is researched with academic rigor and executed with bar precision. Over 200 rum labels behind the bar. The Daiquiri selection alone covers 8 variations. The French Quarter location feels exactly right for what they are doing.
Lost Lake Chicago rum bar
Lost Lake
Logan Square, Chicago  ·  $$  ·  Mon-Sun 5pm-2am
The Logan Square tiki bar that took Chicago's cocktail scene by surprise. The rum selection spans 200 bottles organized by production region, making it one of the most educational back bars in the Midwest. The cocktail program is built around forgotten historical recipes that the team has spent years reconstructing. More than just cocktails, this is a rum education in bar form. Also covered in our Chicago cocktail bars guide.
Sugar Club Dublin rum bar
Sugar Club
St. Stephen's Green, Dublin  ·  $$$  ·  Thu-Sun 7pm-3am
A live music and cocktail venue that built an unexpectedly serious rum program over 15 years of operation. The back bar holds 180 labels. The rum cocktail menu is 20 drinks deep and changes seasonally. The combination of live music, serious drinks, and a crowd that actually knows what it is ordering makes this the best rum experience in Ireland by a comfortable margin.

The Caribbean Source

No rum list is complete without a nod to where the spirit actually comes from. Kingston and Havana both have venues where the rum is not just the centerpiece but the entire reason the bar exists.

Appleton Estate Bar Kingston Jamaica
Redd's Rum Bar
New Kingston, Jamaica  ·  $  ·  Mon-Sun 3pm-midnight
A New Kingston institution that does not try to be anything other than a serious Jamaican rum bar. The selection leans heavily on Jamaican production with particular depth in Appleton, Hampden, and Worthy Park expressions. The house punch is mixed fresh daily. The no-frills room, the knowledgeable staff, and the prices, a fraction of what you would pay in London or New York for the same pours, make this compulsory.
La Bodeguita del Medio Havana rum
La Bodeguita del Medio
Habana Vieja, Havana  ·  $  ·  Mon-Sun 10am-midnight
The birthplace of the Mojito and still the best place in the world to drink one. The walls are covered in signatures spanning 80 years. The drinks are made by bartenders who have worked the same station for decades. The rum, Cuban Havana Club 3-year, is the correct rum for the correct cocktail in the correct place. Some experiences cannot be replicated elsewhere. This is one of them.

What a Great Rum Bar Gets Right

The best rum bars understand that the spirit's strength is its diversity. Agricole from Martinique, pot-still Jamaican, Barbados column-still, Spanish-style Cuban: these are fundamentally different products that happen to share a base ingredient. A great rum bar uses that diversity to build a menu with range.

The second quality is patience with education. Rum drinkers arrive with less knowledge than whiskey drinkers, on average. The best rum bars treat this as an opportunity, not a problem. Their bartenders explain without condescending. They pour tastes before recommending. They have opinions and share them.

For more spirits destinations, our best tequila bars in the world guide covers another category with the same depth of regional variation. The parallel between rum production regions and tequila production regions is closer than most people realize.
